![]() The store compiles grocery bags of food, sells them for $5, and donates them on behalf of the customer to Sierra Community House, Truckee’s beneficiary this past July. Each store picks a beneficiary for food and monetary donations. In addition to their outstanding food recovery, each Grocery Outlet store runs a food drive each July, called Independence from Hunger. Starting in 2022, California’s Senate Bill 1383 will require all large food generators to donate all edible food to food recovery organizations. Produce that is past its prime and no longer fit for human consumption is donated to a pig farmer in Floriston. Grocery Outlet donates everything still edible from dry food to frozen items, meat and dairy. If not suitable for human consumption, the next best alternative for wasted food is to utilize it for compost or animal feed. Food recovery is an integral part of fighting hunger and climate change. These organizations are now on Grocery Outlet’s donation list, and the store often reaches out when they have extra food items available.įood recovery, or rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste and redistributing it to people in need, is the best use for otherwise wasted food. Food was delivered to the local warming shelter, and Sierra Bible Church and Truckee Lutheran Presbyterian Church were able to reach out to their congregation on Facebook to distribute food to those in need. They reached out to local churches and North Tahoe-Truckee Homeless Services to see if they could help distribute. The packaged and frozen food that can no longer be sold in store is still safe to eat, and the Grocery Outlet owners don’t want to see it go to waste, especially during the economic challenges brought on by COVID-19.ĭuring the holidays when Sierra Community House reached their donation capacity, Grocery Outlet dedicated themselves to finding an alternative outlet for their edible food. When food items pass their “sell by” dates but remain edible, Grocery Outlet delivers them to Sierra Community House for their weekly food distribution program. Upon opening their doors in July, they reached out to Sierra Community House to set up a food donation partnership. Since Grocery Outlet opened in Truckee, the family-owned and operated business has gone above and beyond to prevent food waste and feed the Truckee community. But besides being a mecca for discount shopping, Grocery Outlet is also a champion for another cause: fighting hunger and reducing food waste.ġ1.2 billion pounds of food is landfilled in California each year while almost one in four Californians don’t have enough to eat. This is when we have seen some real bargains although we have found that some of the stores remove some of their more popular lines during these sales.Walking the aisles of Grocery Outlet, you’ll notice lots of great deals on niche items you didn’t know you wanted. We have found that the best time to go there is in early July just after the sales have started. The only negative I have is that there are not a lot of shaded areas to just sit down and take a breather. We have always found the bathrooms in this complex to be exceptionally well maintained and there are also a few places were you can get a drink and have a meal. These included many designer labels known to me as well as a host of others that were not. The directory we picked up advised that there were over 120 stores. It sits on either side of a stream that has several bridges over it and winds around such that, if you complete a full lap of the complex, you will have walked past all of the stores. ![]() I particularly like the layout of this shopping complex. The Outlet centre itself has plenty of free car parking both undercover and out in the open. The trip there continues to improve as the upgrades to the A1 progress. This outlet centre is approximately a 30 minute drive outside of Florence on the way to Bologna. The Mall needs to get a better company or insist this company figure a way to make lines ups work. And only the driver to deal with this all. Others brought their luggage on (not allowed - only your purchases that day). Then later another bus pulls up in the correct spot and total mayhem as everyone rushes back. You “line up” in the correct spot and then the bus pulls up across the street. You think you are in a line and then they open a different door and there is a mad rush. I will assume the problems with purchasing tickets was my fault. My major problem is the bus system there and back. Some deals but always a discount from the stores in town.
